In his latest public advocation for tighter gun control, Jim Carrey made a satirical video lampooning the late actor and former National Rifle Association president, Charlton Heston.
On Sunday, Funny or Die posted a video titled “Cold Dead Hand” starring Carrey as a mustachioed cowboy who fronts a band made up of famous victims of gun violence. John Lennon is on the acoustic guitar, Abraham Lincoln plays the bass, and Ghandi covers the maracas.
Carrey shuffled his feet and pulled his signature rubber faces as he lip synced to a song about how angels couldn't carry Heston's body up to Heaven because he was clutching a gun.
One lyric goes: “Only the devil’s true devotees could profiteer from pain and fear.”
Then there’s the chorus: “It takes a cold, dead hand to decide to pull the trigger. Takes a cold, dead heart. And as near as I can figure with your cold, dead aim, you’re trying to prove you d*ck is bigger. But we know: your chariot may not be swingin’ low.”
Carrey is a long-time gun control activist who often takes to Twitter to bash gun lobbyists. After the Dark Knight shooting in Colorado last year, Carrey called pro-gun people “the real maniacs in this country.” Later, he claimed they were “addicted to violence.”
According to the Huffington Post, Carrey added to his list of unapologetically bold statements yesterday by tweeting: “’Cold Dead Hand’ is abt u heartless motherf*ckers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids. Sorry if you’re offended…”
Carrey said that the onslaught of angry responses to his video has been freeing and delightful.
