While there are plenty of other Marvel-related topics out there, from Iron-Man 3’s new trailer to Guardians of the Galaxy, but the biggest story has become what to do about the Hulk. There have already been two movies on the character and neither of them went on to start successful franchises. Bruce Banner has become a character Marvel cannot figure out how to use and now Joss Whedon has called him “the most difficult Marvel property.”
Earlier this week, actor Mark Ruffalo, who played the hulk in The Avengers last year, told fans that he won’t be the big green monster again until Avengers 2 in 2015, although he didn’t really rule out that a Hulk movie could happen in the future.
On Monday, Whedon told IGN that the idea of adapting the popular Planet Hulk story is “nonsense.”
Today, the writer/director told Deadline that a Hulk movie is harder to do than anyone thinks.
“The Hulk is the most difficult Marvel property because it’s always about balance. Is he a monster? Is he a hero? Are you going to root for a protagonist who spends all his time trying to stop the reason you came to the movie from happening? It’s always a dance,” Whedon explained, adding that the character just naturally works better with a group.
“I don’t think there would be any problem getting a movie together that had enough Banner, even if there was also Hulk,” he added.
Whedon also thought about Ruffalo, who had to admit that he didn’t enjoy acting in the motion-capture jumpsuit all the time while making Avengers. “The real heart of the experience ultimately becomes playing Banner, and the thing that people fell in love with was Banner because I think Mark has you from the first time he shows up,” he said.
