Following more than 16 dedicated years on ABC’s The View Joy Behar has announced she will not return for the next season in order to pursue other avenues.
Behar spoke directly with Deadline discussing her decision to move on from the longstanding talk show. The longstanding cohost informed ABC that when her contract ends in August that she will not be seeking to continue forward with the network.
“It seemed like the right time,” she explained. “You reach a point when you say to yourself, ‘Do I want to keep doing this?’ There are other things on my plate I want to do — I’ve been writing a play, I’ve been neglecting my standup.”
Deadline notes that Behar has since met with CNN’s Jeff Zucker and although she will not confirm if she plans to move on to CNN she did explain that “CNN would be a great place.” Behar also added that she would like to continue working in the field of talk shows saying, “I do like talk shows, I’m interested in talking to people. I want to do an intelligent talk show where you have room to breath.”
During their discussion, Behar noted her good friends, which includes View cohost Barbara Walters. “I have a lot of friends there,” she continues, “And I will miss everyone I’ve worked with because we have a family there. It is a smart talk show because somebody of her stature is leading the conversation; Barbara was one of the main reasons I took that job.”
ABC has since released a statement to Deadline following the news of her departure saying, “Joy Behar has been instrumental in the success of The View from the very beginning. We wish her all the best in this next chapter, and are thrilled that we have her for the remainder of the season.”
Along with her longstanding career on The View, Behar’s other creidts include Ice Age: Continental Drift, Hall Pass , Love is all There is and This is My Life, among many others.
