S. Epatha Merkerson will be teaming up with her former Law & Order co-star, Jesse L. Martin, for the upcoming Marvin Gaye biographical film, Sexual Healing.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Merkerson will play the late singer’s mother, Alberta. Sexual Healing will be directed by Julien Temple, who has directed many different music film projects. The film will be produced by Vassal Benton and Fred Bestall.
Merkerson played Lt. Anita van Buren on Law & Order from 1991-2010. The actress is currently cast on NBC's Deception and has recently appeared on CBS' The Good Wife. Martin co-starred as Detective Ed Green from 1999-2008.
The film has yet to begin shooting and there is a bit of controversy circulating around it. Marvin Gaye’s ex-wife does not want Jesse Martin to portray Marvin Gaye, reports the New York Daily News.
The film has been in development chaos for a while now. Lenny Kravitz was set to play Gaye but he backed out because Gaye’s son did not want him.
The film will focus on the drug and depression ridden later years of Gaye’s career leading up to his death.
Production will start late March.
