MTV decides to pass on ‘Hot Mess’ pilot from ‘Awkward’ creator

By Daniel S Levine,

MTV has decided to not go forward with Hot Mess, a pilot from Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Iungerich had written the pilot and was set to executive produce the series, but she left the project two weeks ago. So, MTV’s decision to not move forward doesn’t come as a surprise.

Deadline notes that Hot Mess had actually been a major contender to get picked up by the network for a series, since Awkward has been such a big hit with critics. However, MTV executives ultimately decided that if Iungerich wasn’t going to do it, then there was no reason to keep it going.

Hot Mess had starred Annabelle Stephenson as Amanda Marshall, a woman who frequently gets in her own way when it comes to love. The series would have tracked her romantic mishaps, following a surprising run-in with an ex.

Despite the success with Awkward, this is Iungerich’s second pilot MTV has passed over recently. Last year, the network decided not to with Dumb Girls.

Awkward is currently in production for its third season, which Iungerich will oversee. It premiers on April 16.
