Netflix’s next original series will be Sense8, the first TV project for the Andy and Lana Wachowski, the sibling team behind The Matrix and Cloud Atlas. The 10-episode series will debut in late 2014 and will be exclusive to Netflix Instant subscribers.
The project was co-created with J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame, notes Deadline. Straczynski’s Studio JMS is co-producing with Reliance Entertainment/Motion Picture Capital’s TV division and Georgeville TV. The plot is mostly under-wraps, but it is described as “a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted.”
Ted Sarandos praised the project, adding, “Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time.”
The Wachowskis said, “We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy.”
As The Verge notes, all 10 episodes will be up instantly, just like House of Cards earlier this year.
Since Houe of Cards launched in February, Netflix has claimed that it was an immense success, although they wouldn’t release specific statistics. The show’s second season is already in production.
Sense8 is also just the latest original series announced by Netflix. The company announced a collaboration with DreamWorks Animation to create a series titled Turbo: F.A.S.T. to tie-in with the upcoming film.
