Planned Parenthood criticizes NYC’s ‘Cost of Teen Pregnancy’ campaign

By Alexi Knock,

Planned Parenthood recently trashed a new campaign by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg that aims to prevent teen pregnancy.

According to Yahoo News, Planned Parenthood said that the PSA shames sexually active teens. The posters will be displayed on buses and in subway stations.

Haydee Morales, vice president of education and training at Planned Parenhood’s New York office said in a statement, “The latest NYC ad campaign creates stigma, hostility and negative public opinions about teen pregnancy and parenthood rather than offering alternative aspirations for young people. The city’s money would be better spent helping teens access health care, birth control and high-quality sexual and reproductive health education, not an ad campaign intended to create shock value.”

The “Cost of Teen Pregnancy” campaign, features ads with babies and has statements such as ,"Honestly Mom, chances are he won't stay with you. What happens to me?"

Another poster says, "Dad, you'll be paying to support me for the next 20 years.”

Planned Parenthood has a history of standing up for young women’s rights in the face of controversy and the organization has deep-rooted efforts to prevent teen pregnancy through providing contraception and educational programs.
