Shailene Woodley, who stars in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and has also been praised for her role alongside George Clooney in The Descendants, has been offered the lead role in the film version of John Green's novel Fault in Our Stars.

Director Josh Boone told Entertainment Weekly, “Over 250 girls read for the part, but it wasn’t until Shailene stepped in front of the camera that I truly saw Hazel for the first time. It was like lightning striking. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what I have.”

Woodley will portray Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16-year-old girl who finds love after joining a cancer support group.

The Hollywood Reporter shares that Green, the author of the book, loved Woodley's audition. He said, “Watching her audition, I felt like Hazel Grace Lancaster was talking to me. It was eerie -- and very exciting."

It was also mentioned that Woodley is a huge fan of the novel, and that her audition demonstrated the perfect “essence” of the character.

Woodley is also set to play Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming film The Amazing Spiderman 2.
