Simon Cowell is still trying to fill two judges' seats on the reality singing competition The X Factor USA. A recent report claims he's set his sights on couple Katy Perry, 28, and John Mayer, 35, and has offered them a joint $20 million deal.
Perry and Mayer have been an on-and-off couple since July 2012. NOW Magazine suggests that Cowell hopes to capitalize on their unsteady relationship, reporting a source saying, “Simon sees it as a brilliant pairing. Katy's sassy, honest and a huge star while John's more reserved. Having them as rivals would be genius - if they had on-air bust-ups, it'd be unmissable."
At the end of last year, major record executive L.A. Reid announced that he would be leaving his position as one of the original judges on The X Factor, despite his mentoring this past season’s winner, Tate Stevens. Shortly after, Britney Spears confirmed her resignation from the panel as well. Spears’s exit was hounded by rumors that she was going to be fired anyway due to her low ratings appeal.
The $20 million deal for Perry and Mayer is still unconfirmed and Cowell’s hunt for high-profile musicians is still on. L.A. Reid gave a personal endorsement to Hollywood Life in favor of Rihanna as his replacement and Cowell reportedly pursued that option, but nothing seems to have come of it.
NOW Magazine noted that if Perry and Mayer accept the deal they would become the first ever couple to sit on the same judging panel of a reality competition show.
