Sportsman channel host Gregory Rodriguez killed in possible murder, suicide

By Gavriella Tjandra,

Sportsman Channel's A Rifleman's Journal host George Rodriguez was shot to death last night in the house of the husband of a woman he was visiting.

The Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry told E! News that they had identified the shooter as Wayne Bengston. He reportedly roughed his wife up and then drove her and their 2-year-old son to a relative's house. Bengston then drove back home and shot himself.

Curry said it was an "open-and-shut case. Homicide and suicide."

He said that the emergency responded to a call roughly at 11 p.m., and by that time, Rodriguez had been shot multiple times.

They found that Rodriguez was visiting Bengston's wife at her mother's home, when Bengston showed up with a gun at around 10:20 p.m. and began shooting the TV show host.

Police chief Bill Dial told Billings Gazette that Bengston shot Rodriguez with a .44 caliber revolver from around three feet away.

Dial said that Rodriguez was at the Flathead County for a business purposes, and stopped at his friend (the woman)'s house for a little chit-chat.

"Mr. Bengston came into the home and shot him immediately. We think that it was just a professional relationship," Dial continued. "But perhaps the husband thought it was more than that. But that is just conjecture.”

Bengston's son reportedly was sleeping at the time the shooting happened, and did not witness the incident. He had been taken by the Child Protective Services, and reunited with his mother.
