‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ gets early U.K. release date

By Daniel S Levine,

If you want to see Star Trek Into Darkness a week before anyone else in the U.S., you have to travel to the U.K. to do so. Paramount announced today that the highly anticipated film will hit theaters in the U.K. on May 9.

Deadline confirmed that the film will hit IMAX 3D, 3D and 2D theaters that day. U.S. fans won’t get to see the film until May 15 at the earliest, when IMAX 3D showings will start. The film will get a wide release in the U.S. on May 17.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Paramount denied rumors that the U.S. release date would be moved up as well. So, it looks like the studio is sticking with May 15 and 17. If you don’t want to be spoiled, we suggest you not visit any U.K. sites before those dates.

Deadline also confirmed that any rumors that the blockbuster will be shown during the Cannes Film Festival in May are not true, especially since the festival doesn’t start until May 15 this year.

Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty, let his U.K. fans know the good news on Twitter. “Looks like Star Trek Into Darkness will land in the UK first. Release date May 9th. That's about 8 weeks away. Not long considering,” he wrote.

Star Trek Into Darkness is the follow-up to J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot. Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine are returning for Spock and Kirk, respectively. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the film’s mysterious villain.
