After learning of the baby’s medical issues, Crystal Kelly, a surrogate mother in Connecticut, was offered ten thousand dollars, by the baby’s future parents, to have an abortion.
RTT News has reported that Kelly was unemployed and struggling to raise her two daughters when the couple contacted her. She embraced the opportunity as she would be granted $22,000 while simultaneously helping a couple in need.
The relationship between the couple and Kelly grew as they were so very thankful for what she was doing for them. The couple bought Kelly’s children gifts and even made sure that she financially wasn’t struggling to pay rent due to the fact that she was carrying their child. They immediately bonded and were understood to be everlasting friends.
As nice as this story seems, it doesn’t necessarily have such a happy ending.
After a series of awkward sonograms, Kelly and the child’s parents entered the Hartford Hospital on February 16, 2012 awaiting the results of the sonogram. Kelly was twenty one weeks pregnant, as reported by CNN.
This test stated that the child had a cleft lip and palate, a cyst in the brain, and a complex heart abnormality. Doctors assured the three adults that the child would need a series of surgeries upon birth and that the child only had a twenty five percent chance at living a normal life.
It was within days that the couple was offering Kelly to have an abortion, yet she refused to do her religious beliefs and moral reasons.
In a complex and extremely detailed legal battle, Kelly did wind up having the baby and the baby was soon adopted by another couple who look at the child as a sign of strength rather than suffering.
The baby’s actual parents do keep in touch with the adoptive parents and are informed on the baby’s well being.
