Marvel made several big announcements at SXSW in Austin, Texas over the weekend, but the biggest was easily a promotion called Marvel #1, which gives readers 700 first issues for free online.
The Disney-owned company said that the 700 issues, which stretch from Marvel’s beginnings to today, will be available at the Marvel Comics app and Marvel Comics Digital Comics Shop. Marvel #1 started on Sunday and will run through Tuesday 11 p.m. Eastern time.
Marvel SVP – Sales, Digital & Print David Gabriel called the promotion the “perfect way to show everyone how much we believe in our material by letting them try the first issues for free, because we’re sure once they start, they won’t stop.”
Marvel #1 gives fans introductions to the key characters that are being used in the films. Gabriel stressed that the point of the effort is to bring “new readers into the fold.”
According to ComicBook.com, Marvel made several other announcements at the festival, including Earth’s Mightiest Show. The pop culture show will be hosted by Blair Butler and promises to be filled with big interviews and news from comics, movies and video games.
There is also Project Gamma, which adds sounds and music to your digital comics experience.
