In a Steubenville, Ohio courtroom Sunday, Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond were convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl from West Virginia, who came across the Ohio River for a night of drinking in August 2012.
According to Yahoo!, Judge Thomas Lipps ordered 17-year-old Mays and 16-year-old Richmond to a minimum of one year in an appointed correctional facility- or longer if a child service expert deems worthy. Mays received an additional year for photographing and distributing nude images of the intoxicated teen.
Mays and Richmond are noted as being a part of the notorious Big Red football team.
Yahoo! noted that the environment these young boys grew up in was overly permissive of drinking, driving and taking advantage of lenient parents. Additionally, there are bars in the area that will serve and sell the alcohol to minors.
Some of their teammates testified saying that they didn’t realize the boys were committing a crime.
“It wasn’t violent. I always pictured it as forcing yourself on someone,” Evan Westlake, one of the teen's teammates explained.
Westlake walked in on Mays and Richmond, noting that the boys never penetrated her. Westlake stated that Mays slapped his penis on the girl's hip while Richmond violated her with two fingers while she was passed out on the basement floor.
The young woman apparently never knew she was assaulted, and only realized when she heard stories on social media and saw the videos and photographs.
CNN reported that the unidentified victim was not present during the ruling, but her parents were.
Her mother stood and addressed the court after it was adjourned saying, “Human compassion is not taught by a teacher, a coach or a parent. It is a God-given gift instilled in all of us. You displayed not only a lack of this compassion, but a lack of any moral code."
