UCF dorm evacuated after corpse, explosives found

By Daniel S Levine,

A University of Central Florida dorm has been evacuated after a corpse, guns and explosive devices were discovered in a room early Monday.

According to WKMG Orlando, the body and devices were found in Tower 1, which houses 500 students, after midnight. Authorities later said that the man’s death was apparently caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Students claimed that the body was on the sixth floor, but officers aren’t sure if the person was a student or not.

USA Today reports that UCF spokesman Grant Heston confirmed that an assault weapon and explosive devices were in the dorm room. Heston added that the Orange County bomb squad, FBI and police are safely removing the devices.

“We don't believe there is any imminent threat to the campus,” Heston said. In addition to evacuations, a parking garage was closed.

UCF’s main campus will be closed until noon. The university has 60,000 students.

“It's unnerving, for sure,” a woman told WKMG, reports CBS News. “Definitely not used to it, especially living on campus. You hear about that a lot living off campus, but it's especially rare living on campus.”
