The Voice returned tonight featuring two brand new coaches, Latin super star Shakira and hip-hop star Usher. Shakira and Usher joined returning coaches Blake Shelton and Adam Levine. To kick off this season of The Voice, all four coaches took the stage in their own rendition of the Beatles' “Come Together.”
The blind auditions began with a set of twins, The Morgan’s. The Morgan’s performed “Fallin’” by Alicia Keys. Within the first few notes, Shelton and Usher turned their chairs around. Levine turned around third. Shakira followed in fourth turning her chair. Shelton said that he hit button before he even realized that a duo was performing. Usher said that if the Morgan twins picked him, it would be a once in a lifetime journey and they would win together. Levine added that the harmony was great and he gave the duo major unique points. Shakira closed the comments by saying that she had faith in the duo's talent and that she would like to be a part of that process. The twins chose to have Shelton as their coach.
Up next to audition was Jess Kellner, from Austin, Texas. Kellner performed, “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Shakira and Usher both turned their chairs around about halfway through the first verse. Usher said that he was very intrigued by Kellner’s performance. Shakira added that Kellner would improve as a vocalist with the confidence that she can inject in her. In the end, Kellner chose to join Team Usher.
Following Kellner was Mark Andrew. Andrew took the stage and performed “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” by Bob Dylan. Levine turned around first. Shakira closely followed Levine, turning her chair around second. Levine said that Andrew didn’t sound like anyone else he had heard before and that Andrew had strong vocal control. Shakira expressed her passion for Andrew. After much debate Andrew chose to join team Shakira.
Janetza Miranda auditioned next. Miranda sang, “Titanium,” originally performed by Sia and David Guetta. Even with a very powerful rendition of “Titanium,” no judge turned around for Miranda. Shakira said that if the song had been in a key down, her performance would have been better. Usher added that this was only the start for Miranda.
Gloria took the stage next. This was the first live performance Gloria had ever taken part in. Gloria sang “Mean” by Taylor Swift. Usher and Shelton hit their buttons at the same time and turned around for the country singer. Levine joined third and turned his chair around. After much deliberation from the coaches, the sixteen-year-old country star went with Shelton.
Up next to audition was Vedo. Vedo chose to perform “Boyfriend” by Justin Bieber. Usher turned around first. Since Usher was the only coach who turned around, Vedo automatically joins Team Usher.
Christian Porter took the stage next. Porter took on the LMFAO classic, “Sexy and I Know It,” with an acoustic flare. Shakira turned her chair around first. Shelton turned his chair second followed by Usher third. Levine said the reason he didn’t turn his chair around was because he was so blown away by the unique style, he simply wasn’t ready for it yet. Shelton said that he is already a fan and would love the chance to get to work with Porter. Shakira said that she loved the way he captivated the audience and would like him to be on her team. In the end, Porter chose to be on Team Blake.
After many successful blind auditions, a few vocalists did not make the cut. Starting with Nicole Serrano who performed a cover of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” The judges also said no to James Shealy who sang a cover of “Not Over You,” by Gavin DeGraw. The judges also passed on Hunter Elizabeth who sang “Mercy.”
Leah Lewis took the stage next. Lewis combines musical influences from country music and bluegrass. Lewis chose to perform “Blown Away” by Carrie Underwood. Lewis had a powerful performance but it left the judges wanting more.
Kris Thomas followed Lewis. Thomas sang “Saving All My Love For You.” Shakira turned her chair around first. Shelton turned around only to exclaim, “You are a dude!” Shakira was the only coach to turn her chair around.
James Irwin took the stage next to try to impress the judges. Irwin sang The Script’s hit, “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved.” Irwin gave a passionate performance but no judges turned their chair around.
Judith Hill took the stage for the final audition of the night. Hill had previously been a singer on the Michael Jackson “This is It” tour. Hill performed “What a Girl Wants.” Usher turned his chair around with Levine first. Shakira followed suit and Shelton rounded out the coaches by turning his chair last. Levine said that Hill performed that song as well as former coach Christina Aguilera did. Usher said that if Hill would choose him as a coach they would not only win The Voice, but they would take over the world. Shakira said that Hill needed a girl like herself coaching her. After much intense deliberation, Hill chose to join Team Adam.
The blind auditions continue tomorrow on NBC.
