Woman who had five transplants gives birth

By Deana DeLisio,

Fatema Al Ansari, 26, was given a new liver, pancreas, stomach and small and large intestine. Six years later, she has given birth to a healthy baby girl.

According to The Associated Press, Ansari is believed to be the first person to give birth after receiving a five organ transplant. The multi-step transplant was administered at Jackson Memorial in 2007 and is the same place where she has given birth to her healthy 4 pound 7 ounce daughter.

Sky News has reported that the transplants were conducted due to a major blood clot that Ansari had attained within her intestines.

Dr. Shalih Yasin has been researching to find out the likelihood of Ansari giving birth. He has seen cases in which women have given birth after receiving one transplant.

“We have searched all medical literature for any pregnancy that had five multi-transplants and this is the first case to our knowledge,” he said.

Ansari was forced to terminate a prior pregnancy due to her diagnosis and therefore didn’t believe that she would be able to get pregnant once again.

“It’s a hard feeling to express,” said Ansari, who already admits that she will be trying for a second baby, “It’s the best feeling in the world.”

Ansari and her husband, Khalifa Alhayal, live in Qatar and expected to return home shortly.
