A California $4 million yacht owner was in for a shock on Monday when he turned on his television to see his 82-foot luxury sailboat being washed ashore 20 miles from its home dock.
According to Reuters, two men and a woman were found on the vessel. At first, authorities thought the three needed to be rescued and were soon arrested when the yacht owner called to say that he saw the ship on TV. The thieves had sailed the boat from Sausalito and sailed it along the Pacific Coast.
When the yacht washed ashore in a popular beach area, sheriffs on jet skis surrounded the boat as the thieves denied their assistance.
According to The Associated Press, the three were on the boat with pizza and beer when they found themselves stuck in a sandbar.
Sausalito police Sgt. Bill Fraass told The Associated Press, "We do have thefts of vessels throughout the area, but the theft of a vessel of this size is uncommon.”
