The Voice coach Shakira is slamming ex-boyfriend Antonio de la Rua, who is suing the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer for $250 million. De la Rua claims he is the man behind her “brand.”
De la Rua claims to be the man behind such hits songs as “Waka Waka” and “Hips Don’t Lie,” the New York Daily News reports. Shakira has since asked a judge to throw out the suit, claiming that his allegations are simply false.
In her documents, Shakira explains that she was already a superstar before she met de la Rua in 2000, noting that she only hired him out of pitty as he was unemployed at the time. “I was already a well-known and recognized artist, and my international career was established and solid,” her documents state.
Additionally, the documents state that de la Rua “lacked experience or knowledge of the music industry in 2005, at his request, I decided to involve (de la Rua) in some matters relating to the business” because he “was unemployed.”
The Sun Times reports that the relationship between Shakira and de la Rua ended in 2010 and he was fired from her team shortly thereafter.
“You can be sure Shakira will fight this one with everything she’s got. This is not just about business, but also very personal. Lots of ugliness here,” a source close to Shakira reveals.
