The Boston community could rest easily last night after a five-day hunt for the two brothers responsible for bombing Monday’s Boston Marathon, which claimed the lives of three and injured 180 others.
The bombers, identified as 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his 19-year-old brother Dzhokar Tsarnaev, were also responsible for the death of an MIT police officer whom they shot and killed after burglarizing a convenience store. Tamerlan was shot and killed following a shootout with police. Shortly after the suspects were identified, it was revealed that the eldest brother had a wife and 3-year-old daughter, whose family released a statement Friday following the capture of Dzhokar.
Katherine Russell of Rhode Island met Tamerlan in college and converted to Islam during their courtship, USA Today reports.
"Our daughter has lost her husband today, the father of her child,” the statement from Russell's family reads. “We cannot begin to comprehend how this horrible tragedy occurred. In the aftermath of the Patriot's Day horror, we know that we never really knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev. … Our hearts are sickened by the knowledge of the horror he has inflicted."
