'Wipeout' Recap: 'Wipeout Family Values'

Tonight’s Wipeout is family themed. Twelve family teams will compete for the $50,000 prize.

The episode started out with a series of family-related jokes from hosts John Anderson and John Henson, the highlight of which was Henson joking about his mother’s new obsession with pole fitness classes.

After the jokes, the hosts went on to describe tonight’s qualifying course, which will features It’s No Picnic, followed by Fail Boxes, then off to the Big Balls, onto to the Trippidy Skippidy Flippidydo, or as Anderson likes to call it, evil, and finally the Array of Desserts, where families will get “cookies and creamed.”

The first contestants are a father-daughter country pair named Flint and Samantha Palmer. They introduced themselves with a poem, and then went into the race. Flint starts it off by falling off the Flyswatter, losing his cowboy hat in the process. Samantha tries, but she falls as well. They move on to the Fail Boxes, and are knocked off by surprise punching bags. Samantha takes a pretty spectacular fall off the Big Balls, and then her father has the smashes his face on the Trippidy Skippidy Flippidydo. Her father gets through the Array of Desserts, but just when he thinks he’s done, a punching bag knocks him off. Flint finishes, while Samantha struggles with the Array of Desserts. The two finish with a qualifying time of 7:25.

Next up are sibling pair Heather and Justin Davenport. Some healthy sibling rivalry, and some weird pet names (sweetcakes?) overshadow their run.

Mercedes and Chase Flower, from Henderson, Nevada, get their chance on their course. Chase runs right off the Flyswatter, while Mercedes does a pretty spectacular flip into the mud. Both are knocked off the Fail Boxes.

A montage of falls are up next, talking about how being family helps and hurts when playing Wipeout. The wonderful line, “no time to pick any wedgies,” comes out of this montage.

Up next is Georg Tercero, whose daughter Kimberly has a nasty habit of wandering off, leaving him alone at the start line. She comes back, and they begin their qualifying run. They do pretty well until the finish platform, whose punching arm seems to be fooling a lot of people today, tricks George and he winds up in the water.

Henson and Anderson bring us back from a commercial break with a joke about Henson not wanting to talk to his Nana and making Anderson do it instead.

The next team is Dylan and Nicki Scott, a brother sister pair who are “great because [they] are great.” Nicki is a marathon runner, and Dylan volunteers for green peace, but overshadowing that is their awesome matching tuxedo t-shirts. They both take hilarious falls on the Fly Swatter, which is definitely my favorite obstacle of the night so far.
“Brothers from another mother“ Casey Jones and Devin Mathers are up next. After Devin makes the regrettable gaffe of calling his mother fat on national television, they struggle on the Trippidy Skippidy Flippidydo.

Kasey Contreros and Stacy Green are up next. The two “think” they’re second cousins, and try to explain how they’re related to Jill. Stacey bounces up and down on the Trippidy Skippidy Flippidydo, before falling off into the water.

Next up is another montage about Wipeout conspiracies.

Aspiring filmmaker Ricky Rodriguez and stepdad Mark Caswell get ready to start. Their race plays out as a fake trailer, which I actually really liked. It was undercut with dramatic music and a fun narration. The two finish with a time of 7:39.

The pairs moving onto the next round are revealed: “movie magic” Mark Caswell and Ricky Rodriguez, “country bumpkins” Flint and Samantha Palmer, “corporate kids” Chase and Mercedes Cloward, “absent-minded dad” Georg Tercero and his “wandering daughter” Kimberly, “the Great Scotts” Dylan and Nicki, and “shamily” Stacy Green and Kasey Contreros.

The six remaining teams move on to the next obstacle course. This one is called Octopushy, although filling in today in honor of family week is her mother, Octomommy. The course has four rotating arms. Once contestants make it around the obstacle, they can jump to the finish platform, but they can only advance if their partner is there as well. The first four teams to get to the finish move on.

The horn blows, and the obstacle begins. Flint tries first, but falls off immediately. Dylan does the same. Chase crosses the first and second tentacles, and is the first to make it to the finish platform. Samantha and Georg jump on at the same time, but the first tentacle knocks down Samantha. Georg becomes the next to make it to the finish line. Ricky jumps on next but falls off immediately. Samantha tries again, doing better this time, and eventually making it to the finish platform. Mark jumps on, but fails to make it to the finish platform. Stacey jumps on; playing the obstacle course smarter than the others and making it to the finish on her first try. Four teams now have one family member across, but there are still no pairs.

Nicki jumps on next, and eventually makes it to the finish. The “Great Scotts” Dylan and Nicki become the first to move on to the next round. Kimberly is the next to try. She makes it to the finish, but is knocked off. Flint tries again, making it to the finish line and meaning that the “Country Bumpkins” Flint and Samantha Palmer are the second team to move on to the next round.

Kimberly tries again, and after some trouble with the finish platform, she makes it to the end. Only one spot remains as the “absent-minded dad” Georg Tercero and his “wandering daughter” move on to the next round.

Kasey takes her first try at the obstacle, only to be knocked off the finish platform. Ricky tries next, and they bring out the movie gag again. Ricky’s commitment brings him to the finals. Kasey and Mark both try to get to their waiting family members and secure the last spot in the next round. Mark falls off the finish platform, and Kasey makes it to the finish, giving the “shamily” Stacy Green and Kasey Contreras the final spot in the next round.

Anderson and Henson joke about how they have never had grandparents run their course, before introducing the next obstacle course. As a part of Wipeout's greatest hits, the course will be focusing on classic rock and roll. First, the contestants “sock-hop” across the Percussion Drumps, past the spinning arms and then onto the Platform Number 2, across the keyboards, and through the string guitar to the finish. Just like the other courses, both team members have to make it to the finish to be successful. The top two teams move on to the Wipeout Zone.

Flint is the first to try to jump off the rotating start platform, but he falls in the water. Dylan makes it past the spinning arms, but then falls into the water. Georg makes it past the spinning arms and onto the second platform. Stacey also makes it past the spinning arms and onto the platform, as does Samantha. Dylan follows suit.

One member of each family is now at the piano area, but Stacey and Georg quickly fall off. Dylan does well, and makes it past the keyboards. Stacey tries again, but still can’t make it through. Dylan tries to get through the string guitar, but he doesn’t make the cut. Samantha makes her way onto the keyboards, but falls off. Dylan makes it through the string guitar on his second try, becoming the first to make it to the finish.

Flint makes it onto the second platform to meet up with daughter Samantha. Nicki is stuck on the keyboards as Stacey and Kimberly make it onto the second platform. Georg makes it past the keyboards, as does Samantha. Georg becomes the second one to make it to the finish.

Stacey tries again on the keyboards, but can’t make it through. Kacey makes it past the keyboards onto the next platform. Samantha tries to jump through the string guitar, but falls into the water. Kimberly takes a shot at the keyboards, but falls off at the end. Stacey makes it through the string guitar and becomes the third to make it to the finish.

Flint works on the keyboards, while daughter Samantha makes it to the finish. There is one member of each family through at this point, so the next two to make it through will earn their family a spot in the Wipeout Zone.

Kasey makes it through the guitar and onto the platform, making the “shamily” the first to head to the Wipeout Zone. Flint makes it through the string guitar, and the “country bumpkins” earn their spot in the finals.

Now it’s time for the Wipeout Zone. The obstacle begins with a launch from the Scare Chair, followed by Blockbuster, a rocking wall, which the hosts say is so difficult that if contestants continuously fail in their attempts, they can take a time penalty and move ahead. Then comes the Space Pod of Doom, and then the Bounder Pounder, a series of rotating trampolines. Best-combined time wins the grand prize of $50,000.

Up first is Stacey Green of the “shamily.” Stacey enters the water upside down and backwards after she is shot from the Scare Chair. She then moves onto the Blockbuster. She takes a fall pretty quickly, and then chooses the time penalty option. She then enters the Space Pod of Doom, which she pretty quickly falls out of. The second time she does slightly better, managing to stay on her feet, but she still doesn’t make it through. Third times the charm, and she moves onto the last obstacle. She takes a quick fall off the Bounder Pounder, but does better on her second try, finishing with a time of 14:19.23.

Next is “country bumpkin” Samantha Palmer. She also lands upside down and backwards off the pretty terrifying Scare Chair. She takes a fall off the Blockbuster, and decides to take the time penalty and move on. The Space Pod of Doom proves problematic for her, and she falls off. She makes it through on her second try, and is currently leading Stacey’s time by two minutes. A fall off the Bounder Pounder slows her down, but she still ends with an impressive time of 12:39.01.

Kasey Contreros is up next, trying her hardest to take the lead away from the “country bumpkins.” Kasey’s launch from the Scare Chair lands her on her face, but she gets up and moves onto the Blockbuster, which she falls off of almost immediately. She is the first contestant to try again, but it doesn’t do her any good, and she decides to take the time penalty. She jumps into the Space Pod of Doom, and takes a hard fall out. She makes it on her second try, but fails to make it past the Bounder Pounder. She falls for a second time, and finally makes it to the finish, giving the “shamily” a combined time of 35:31.81.

“Country bumpkin” dad, Flint, is ready to take his turn on the obstacle course. He has 23 minutes to complete the Wipeout Zone to guarantee his family’s win. He does a pretty spectacular in-air flip off the Scare Chair, and then moves onto the Blockbuster. He makes it the farthest of any of the contestants on the Blockbuster, but he falls off the final block. He decides to take a second try, and becomes the first and only person of the night to conquer Blockbuster. He jumps into the Space Pod, but fails to make it to the platform. It happens again, but on his third try he makes it to the platform, only to be knocked off by the spinning pod. Still, he got two feet down, and is allowed to continue without another try on the Space Pod. Flint is looking extremely tired at this point, and it’s not helped by the fall that he takes off the Bounder Pounder. He has thirty seconds left at this point to beat the “shamily,” but he fails to make it, and Stacey and Kasey win the grand prize.
