The lone but fearsome conservative voice on The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, confirmed yesterday that she would be leaving the ABC talk show for Fox and Friends on Fox News Channel. Hasselbeck has been the source of much ado while working at The View for the past 10 years, coming under fire for her sharp commentary and for becoming emotional on air. Take a look at these ten most memorable moments involving Elisabeth Hasselbeck:
Before the announcement that Hasselbeck would be leaving ABC, Hasselbeck looked on as Barbara Walters issued a denial on-air that Hasselbeck was leaving. In March 2013, Walters said that ABC had no plans for Elisabeth to leave the show and that her point of view was valued as the counterpoint to everyone else's on the program. This was the same day that Behar announced that she was leaving at the end of the season.
On an episode in which Rose Rock was a guest, Elisabeth Hasselbeck had an embarrassing moment when she stood up and began applauding, waiting for Rock to enter the studio through the guest entrance. However, Rock, was already seated on the couch. The gaffe earned Hasselbeck some hearty laughs.
8. Gracious Loser
After the election of Barack Obama in 2008, all eyes were on Elisabeth Hasselbeck when audiences tuned into The View. Hasselbeck had campaigned long and hard for John McCain, and everyone was curious to see how she was taking the news. Hasselbeck said that even though she wasn't originally a supporter, she would support the President as an American. She called the election of the first African American president a victory for the country.
7. Law and Order SVU
In 2006, an episode of Law and Order: SVU featured a woman named Elizabeth Hassenback who was raped twice and murdered during the episode. Hasselbeck stated on The View that she believed that the character was meant to represent her, that she had tried to call the producer of the show and confront him about it, and that he was rude to her in response.
6. Cornering Kathy Griffin
Kathy Griffin, a comic known for her outrageous jabs at celebrity acquaintances, made a jab about Elisabeth Hasselbeck during her comedy act. Apparently, Hasselbeck was offended because when Griffin came on the show in 2010, Hasselbeck confronted her on air about the joke after yawning and pretending to be falling asleep during Griffin's segment. The audience seemed to side with Griffin, though, because when Griffin retorted back at her, the room burst into applause.
5. Be Nice, Bill Maher
You might have thought that after her experience with Kathy Griffin, Hasselbeck would shy away from confronting people on air, but she didn't. In 2011, Hasselbeck confronted Bill Maher on air about allegedly making a joke about her being sexually assaulted. Maher tried to explain the incident away by saying that he works on a cable network where that kind of material is acceptable.
4. Erin Andrews Apology
In 2010, Elisabeth Hasselbeck made a joke about how the clothing Erin Andrews wore on Dancing With the Stars was so revealing that the peeping tom who was convicted of illegally videotaping her should simply have waited to see an episode of Dancing With the Stars. After hearing that Andrews cried upon hearing her comments, Hasselbeck offered her a tearful, public apology.
3. N-Word Discussion
Hasselbeck came under fire in 2008 for crying after verbally sparring with Whoopi Goldberg during the hot topics segment about the use of the racial slur. Goldberg stated that African Americans and Caucasian Americans lived in different worlds, and Hasselbeck broke down while saying that everyone lived in the same world and the word should not be used in pop culture if we want to move forward.
2. Morning-After Meltdown
One of the first heated moments that Hasselbeck had on The View occurred in 2006 when the subject of the morning-after pill was discussed. Although Barbara Walters repeatedly tried to cut her off, Hasselbeck continued to vigorously discuss her belief that the morning-after pill should not be widely available to women. Walters said that she believed it was important that people be able to have these discussions without going "so crazy." When the show returned from commercial, Hasselbeck was crying and Walters was comforting her.
1. Rosie vs. Elisabeth
Of course, the moment we all remember the most is when former co-host Rosie O'Donnell and Elisabeth got into a shouting match on-air over a personal dispute. O'Donnell had made an anti-war comment regarding the troops in Iraq and was upset that Hasselbeck did not defend her against the backlash she got from the media. Famously, the show was split-screened with the two co-hosts shouting at each other from opposite ends of the table.
