Kyler Pulfrey and Emily Collar of Portland, Oregon found an intruder in their home Sunday, August 18.
Pulfrey and Collar live with her two daughters. Collar’s 6-year-old goddaughter was spending the night, sleeping on a crib mattress on the floor near her bed. Collar asked Pulfrey to turn the air conditioner down at approximately 1 a.m. because she was too cold.
That was when Pulfrey noticed a man who he didn’t know lying on the floor near the goddaughter. The Oregonian reports that the girl’s pants were pulled down.
"Basically, it was a fight for power. I was trying to detain him and he was trying to get away," Pulfrey told local news station KPTV–KPDX. "And I didn't want him going anywhere, so I made sure he wasn't going anywhere."
A roommate called 911. The police quickly arrived and arrested the man, later identified as 21-year-old Pedro Santiago Machi-Menchu, on suspicion of burglary and attempted sexual abuse of a child.
