Top 10 Most Jaw-Dropping VMA Outfits

The 2013 Video Music Awards return to MTV on Sunday, August 25 live from The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

As the hours tick closer to this year’s show, it’s only natural to reminisce on the stand-out moments from previous years. While the complete lyrics of many award-winning hits may be fuzzy, the outlandish fashion statements made by many celebrities are simply unforgettable.

Which of these ten celebrities do you think are experts at pushing the boundaries, and which do you think took their freedom of expression too far?

10. Christina Aguilera (2002)

Was the top half of Christina Aguilera’s wardrobe originally made to be a shirt or a scarf? The verdict is still out.

9. Gwen Stefani (1998)

Gwen Stefani has never been one to try to blend in to the crowd. This night, she chose to rock a blue bikini top, metallic black skirt, black pants, and wedge flip flops all at once.

8. Britney Spears (2001)

Britney’s green bikini was already daring, but her most over the top accessory was the yellow python she rested around her neck for most of the performance.

7. Cher (2010)

Cher’s revival of her infamous Turn Back Time outfit left little to the imagination, but – even decades later- she can still own the leather, see-through look effortlessly.

6. Eva Longoria (2005)

Eva Longoria pushed the envelope when she presented on stage wearing a tan, one-piece bathing suit. Despite the amount of skin she bared, she’s definitely got the body to pull it off.

5. Nicki Minaj (2011)

Nicki definitely turned heads when she showed up at the red carpet in a metal dress complete with a tail, an ice cream necklace, a mouthpiece, and fuzzy slippers. Sometimes I get the meaning behind Minaj’s fashion choices, but this one is just plain bizarre.

4. Macy Gray (2001)

There’s typical album promotion, but then Macy Gray decided to take it to a whole different level with her VMA outfit that doubled as a walking advertisement.

3. Lil Kim (1999)

Lil Kim not only arrived in a lavender onesie with a matching wig, but the cut of her outfit was so drastic that a pasty was necessary to support one side of her chest.

2. Lady Gaga (2010)

Lady Gaga made headlines when she donned a dress and matching headpiece made of raw beef.

1. Rose McGowan (1998)

Rose McGowan would definitely win the award for least amount of fabric used to create her outfit. A few threads covered her nearly naked body.
