Every year at the Video Music Awards, artists try to out-do themselves and their peers. Their outfits have to show more skin. Their performances have to be more intricate. The 2013 VMAs were no exception. Take a look at my picks for the top 10 most outrageous moments from the show. What scenes caught your attention most?
10. No hosts
The first thing that stuck out to me was that there were NO hosts at this year’s VMAs. Kevin Hart even repeated to the crowd that - despite his lengthy monologues - he was not hosting.
9. Shailene Woodley’s new hair-do
The Descendants actress revealed a much shorter ‘do on the VMA stage. According to her Twitter, she chopped off her locks for her upcoming role as Hazel in the movie The Fault in Our Stars.
8. Taylor Swift drops F-bomb?
While she has yet to either confirm or deny her actual statement, it appears she mouthed, “Shut the f*** up” while her ex-boyfriend Harry Styles was on stage to give the award out for Best Pop Video with the rest of his bandmates.
7. Daft Punk’s Brief Appearance
Not only did Daft Punk have to supposedly cancel on Stephen Colbert to attend the VMAs, but they also did not perform their smash hit “Get Lucky” last night, either. How disappointing!
6. Macklemore’s Win
Not shocking because of his talent, but a step toward change! Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Mary Lambert took home the VMA for Best Video with a Social Message for the song “Same Love,” which emphasizes equality with its promotion of gay marriage.
5. Katy Perry’s performance

Katy Perry performed her new anthem “Roar” under the Brooklyn Bridge. Decked out in boxing gear, high notes weren’t the only thing she was prepared to hit.
4. Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech
Taylor Swift accepted the Best Female Video award for “I Knew You Were Trouble.” At the end of her speech, she not-so-subtly made a dig at the bad boy who served as inspiration for the song.
3. N’SYNC Reunion
The adolescent in me fangirled hardcore when the group came together to sing and dance to their mega-popular track “Bye Bye Bye” one more time.
2. Lady Gaga’s performance
In true Gaga style, her time on the stage consisted of multiple costume and wig changes as well as lots of synchronized dancing. She ended the routine in a seashell bikini which she donned for the rest of the night.
1. Miley Cyrus’s performance
I don’t know what I found more disturbing: Cyrus twerking on a married man in her underwear, or her constantly sticking her tongue out as she rubbed herself with a foam finger? No matter how much she yearns to be accepted as an adult, her immature actions prove otherwise.
