There was a massive pileup of vehicles on a bridge in England that left dozens injured on Thursday.
According to NPR, as many as 100 to 130 vehicles were involved in a pileup on a bridge in Kent, England due to a dense fog on a bridge. The accident closed down the A249 Sheppey Crossing. At least 60 people were injured, with eight considered serious.
“For ten minutes afterward, all we could hear was screeching, cars thudding into each other, lorries crashing,” said one driver, Martin Stammers.
The Associated Press reports that the accident began around 7:15 a.m., lasting ten minutes. The Kent Fire and Rescue Services arrived with hydraulic cutting equipment to free six people from their vehicles. The back up was visible for 20 yards once the fog cleared.
A spokeswoman for police says that nobody was killed in the pileup in Kent. Back in 2011, an even larger vehicle pileup occurred in Sao Paulo, Brazil, involving around 300 cars.
