Newborn calf gets stomped on and rejected by mother shortly after birth

An elephant abandoned her calf after stomping on him after giving birth to him in Shendiaoshan Wild Animal Nature Reserve in Rongcheng, China.

Zookeepers removed the baby elephant, treated his wounds and then brought him back to his mother, assuming it was a mistake. Then the mother did it again so the zookeepers removed him permanently, noted The Daily Mail.

"The calf was very upset and he was crying for five hours before he could be consoled," a spokesman said, according to The Christian Science Monitor. "He couldn't bear to be parted from his mother and it was his mother who was trying to kill him."

There's been many pictures taken of the calf crying for his mother and a video on YouTube.

It's highly unusual but it does happen for some cases. There have been cases of baby aardvarks, seals and spider monkeys that have been rejected by their mothers.

Zookeepers announced that baby elephant, Zhuang Zhuang, will be fine after the attacks. They also believe that the mother may be depressed.
