House Speaker John Boehner has announced that he will vote in favor of a military strike after President Barack Obama has said he will seek Congress’ approval.
Boehner publicly speaking out in favor of military action with Obama is being considered a victory as Congress gets closer to returning from recess, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The Republican said after meeting with lawmakers and the president, “I’m going to support the president’s call for action.” He added, “I believe that my colleagues should support this call for action.”
In addition to Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor also has publicly supported the president’s course of action.
According to NBC News, Boehner publicly backing the military strike is a positive sign for the president as he rarely backs the administration. Meanwhile other Republicans are hesitant about getting involved in the Syrian fight.
But the more reluctant might end up being in the minority if Boehner and Cantor’s influence can swing enough Republican votes in favor of a military response.
