Families and friends alike stormed into cinemas over the weekend for the hotly anticipated sequel to 2009's smash hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. While the film received generally lukewarm reviews from critic, the audience didn't seem to care as it soared over last week's spot holder Prisoners.
According to Empire, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 grossed an astonishing $34 million over the opening weekend. The total left Prisoners in the dust (but still a commendable second week) with just $10.9 million.
The Joseph Gordon-Levitt directorial debut Don Jon came in fifth with a reasonable $9 million (it's reported budget was only $6 million).
The film was well received by audiences as well, according to Cinema Score. the film has an A- which is labeled universal acclaim on the website.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 had a strong debut and looks like the weeks ahead should prove well for the family flick as no other animated film are slated to be released for some time.
