Jon Stewart is returning to the Daily Show this week! I will admit to some mixed feelings about his return. A small part of me will miss John Oliver hosting the show. I really enjoyed how he played up his British perspective and his interactions with the correspondents. His interviews were also great. However, a lot of the jokes were about how everyone prefers Stewart. That joke was only going to last so long, and I think it was going to reach its limit soon. I am sure it got there for a number of other viewers.
Oliver did not do much differently than Stewart and I cannot really say he made the show his own. However, he was different enough that it did not just feel like he was doing a Stewart impression.
Most of me, though, is super excited to see Stewart return. I have been a huge fan of Stewart since I was in high school and I have missed him on the show. I am sure most of the show’s fans are just as excited about Stewart’s return. Hopefully Stewart will be able to get back into the Daily Show groove quickly and deliver some excellent episodes this week.
One thing I have been thinking about while Oliver was hosting was that Oliver’s time as host may partly be in preparation for Stewart leaving the show permanently. Stewart is not going to want to host the show forever. Having Oliver host shows that someone can fill that role and keep the flow of the show going. I will not be surprised if they start having guest hosts for short periods of time every few months. It will serve to ease viewers into the idea that other hosts can perform and wean us off of Stewart.
It all comes back to how excited I am to see Stewart again. I cannot wait to see what they have in store for us this week!
