Avatar and Star Trek star Zoe Saldana opened up about her sexuality this month in the fall issue of Glam Belleza Latina. In an interview with the magazine, she talks about being romantically involved with a woman, her father’s death and her career.
Zoe has previously made comments in the press about her sexuality. She’s talked about potentially ending up in a relationship with a woman. Addressing the topic, she told the magazine, “Honestly, as women, we have to teach the world to back up. I don’t know where I’m going to be in a year or five years, and so yeah, that [raising a family with another woman] can happen.”
The star went on to talk about her mother’s openness towards certain things. Zoe said, “In my house we never talked about “oh, black this, gay that, woman this, lesbian that... My mom never knew who we were going to bring to dinner at the house. Es difícil para mi hablar de este (It’s very difficult for me to talk about this) topic because it’s very foreign to me. I’ll talk about it because everybody else talks about it, but deep down, when I’m with my sisters, we don’t talk about ourselves in that way. We talk about life in food, flavors, and music. [Laughs] That’s how we are.”
After Saldana’s father tragically died in a car accident, her mother moved Zoe and her sister to the Dominican Republic, her father’s homeland, to live and grow up with their grandparents. Her mother, Asalia Nazario, can see that this hard decision paid off in the long run. When Zoe came back to the United States, she landed a role alongside Britney Spears in Crossroads, but what really catapulted her to the top was her role as a ballerina in the movie Center Stage. Now she is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Sharing her thoughts, she said, “Strength is something that either you’re born with or you acquire. It’s nature and nurture, you know? I do believe that it runs in my family, but it’s mostly the way that we were raised - by really strong, confident women.”
Zoe was previously engaged to her boyfriend of 11 years, Keith Britton, CEO of My Fashion Database. They split in 2011. She has also dated her co-star from The Words, Bradley Cooper, but they split after a few months.
According to People, Zoe married artist Marco Perego in a small secret ceremony this summer in front of family and friends. A source close to the two confirmed, “They are very happy."
It looks like Zoe might be raising a family with a man after all. She is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy, which will be out in summer 2014.
