Sandra Bullock and George Clooney’s new space-thriller set a record for opening weekend this month with their new flick Gravity – which grossed $55.6 million.
This year has not been a great one for SciFi and yet Gravity broke critical expectations as it soared past predictions on how much money the movie would make during opening weekend. According to ComicBook.com, the film was projected to open at $45 million – more than ten million less of what it actually made. Reports have been flooding in regarding how Gravity knocked the much-anticipated family fun sequel Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 out of the top spot and even soared past the previous October record holder – Paranormal Activity 3 which debuted at $52.5 million, claims Collider.com with the stats of previous releases. The film even scored an amazing 98 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Gravity focuses on intrinsic human fear of being utterly alone and helpless. The high-budget thriller follows Bullock and Clooney, two astronauts who are floating aimlessly in space after their space shuttle suffered tremendous damage.
With a strong opening weekend, there is speculation if Gravity will be in the races for an Oscar Nomination and continue to stay open in theaters.
