With so much going on visually in "Puttin' on the Ritz" it was hard to catch all the brilliant quips that Shonda worked into the script. Often funny and always in character there were several moments in the episode that stood as particularly exemplarily. Alex, April Callie, Arizona, Stephanie, Derek, Cristina and that one terrifying waiter all deserve high-fives for this week's one-liners. Here are my favorites:
When the donor gala ends up looking more like a circus than a party, the doctors are all a little floored. Cristina, Callie and Meredith convene amongst the Circ du Soleil-esque decorations for a brief moment of solidarity before they are interrupted by a waiter in heavy make-up. Luckily Bailey's commitments at the hospital kept her away. Although it would've been funny to see her around all those clowns.
The only thing funnier than April and Arizona drinking champagne in a supply closet is the two of them then trying to get into a cab. Even with Murphy acting as both a chaperone and a spotter there is no telling who is going to speak, spew or even make it into the vehicle. April mentioning motion sickness doesn't help. Magically the only mishap is Arizona closing the door on her dress.
3. "Eating Shrimp at a party."
Alex has always been the one to shirk his emotions. Unfortunately Jo is new to Broody Alex. Instead of allowing him to work through his feelings, she badgers Alex about his father once she makes the connection between his mood and the mysterious junkie in the hospital. Alex eating his feelings is the brightest moment in the entire sub-plot; it's all down hill from here.
4. "Can I try on your leg?"
Arizona's leg hasn't gotten a lot of screen time since she first agreed to the prosthetic. Okay well Dr. Boswell mentioned it, but let's not go there. April drunkenly mentioning it here is as funny as it is telling. It shows how much Arizona's opinion of her leg has changed since the plane crash. The scene could've launched into a lecture from Arizona or found her in tears, but instead she bursts out laughing.
5. "Oh speech! Speech! Everybody hush up. Sorry...He's going to talk now."
Callie deserves to be stuck with a grieving widow after she told a room full of donors that Arizona was dead. What's going to happen to the money when the widow realizes Arizona is still alive? Whoops. Oh well it's still funny to watch Callie desperately try and claw herself out of the situation. With a little help from Avery, of course.
6. "You're adorable."
Murphy got perhaps the worst deal out of all the interns. Jo had to stand-in for Alex, but still got to go to the party. Stephanie wasn't invited, but ended up rocking the ER. Shane tries a risky procedure, but ends up operating alongside Cristina. Murphy was, to paraphrase Shonda, stuck stealing booze from a party she wasn't invited to. At least Arizona calls her "adorable" at the end of it all.
7. "And I pulled a hunk of glass this big out of a dude's face!"
Last episode Stephanie helped Avery on a facial reconstruction and this episode she manned the ER with little help from Shane or any of the grown-ups. She is fast-tracking to becoming a real doctor. Except then Shane kissed her and everything took a tiny step backwards. But only a tiny one. They recovered.
8. "Are we talking about Matthew or Jesus?"
April's long speeches about faith and her religious life sometimes bog down the narrative. In this scene the parallels to her relationships to both Matthew and Avery make the speech a little more palatable. The audience is left just as confused as Arizona when April starts talking about "him."
9. "You just brought a knife to a gun fight."
The Meredith/Derek rivalry has been around since Season 1. The back and forth between the two has resulted in countless stolen surgeries, lost arguments and drawn out battles. With a newborn in the house, the two engage in a uber-competitive game of "who can charm the most donors." It doesn't help that they're both a little batty from so many days without surgery.
10. "How's Derek liking maternity leave?"
Cristina has never let up on her criticism of Derek. Sometimes serious, something joshing, she always has something to say. From "What? I wanna see the bitch baby tears!" to "You kissed Derek?!" Cristina has always come up with the right line and here is no exception. She finds a spot between his masculinity and his ego and lands quite the blow.
