Last Friday, a man set himself on fire at the National Mall and the man's identity was confirmed earlier this week.
The man has been identified as John Constantino, 64, from Mount Lauren, NJ according to USA Today.
According to the Associated Press, the man died on Friday and DNA was needed to identify him because his burns were so severe. The police still do not know what Constantino’s motives were for his actions.
Constantino poured gasoline on himself in the center part of the Mall before setting himself on fire around 4:20 pm. Bystanders rushed to the man to help put the fire out, taking off their shirts and smothering the fire.
The Los Angeles Times reports that witness Nicole Didyk explained that she saw “flames on the Mall. ... Not like shooting flames, but the grass was on fire."
“There was not a lot people could do because it was a gasoline fire,” said Katy Scheflen, another witness, according to The Associated Press.
