The Southern California alternative rock band The Neighbourhood released their new music video for the single “Afraid” from their debut album I Love You. The band consists of sultry tattooed lead singer Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Bryan Sammis.
“Afraid” is the follow-up single to their breakout hit “Sweater Weather.” “Afraid” takes on a darker and edgy feel with the riveting beat and raw explicit lyrics; “You’re too mean, I don’t like you, f*** you anyway/You make me wanna scream at the top of my lungs/It hurts but I won’t fight you/You suck anyway/You make me wanna die.” It's a contrast to the catchy upbeat pop ballad “Sweater Weather” that brought the band to their mainstream success.
According to the World Famous KROQ, The Neighbourhood call themselves “black-and-white pop” as they use the theme in their art work, performances, music videos, and attire.
During an interview on The Kevin & Bean Show, Rutherford revealed that he has trouble remembering the lyrics of the songs. He said, “Basically, the moral of the story is that I’m really bad at knowing my own lyrics. I’m horrible at it. I get caught in a melody and how a melody makes me feel rather than what the word is saying.”
The Neighbourhood performed at the ALT 98.7 Penthouse and “Afraid” was one of the crowd's favorite songs. ALT 98.7 even named the song “Best Song of the Year” in September.
ALT 98.7 posted the uncensored eccentric music video. “Afraid” captures the black-and-white aesthetics flawlessly, and highlights all five members in a different light. Rutherford bears his mind, body and soul throughout the video. Throughout the video Rutherford is sitting naked on a chair with his hands covering the goods and has “Afraid” written on his forehead. When you least expect it he moves his hands and lets it all hang out.
