Porn site says views surged during government shutdown, online dating sites see usage spike

By Daniel S Levine,

The government shutdown came to an end early Thursday after 16 days. Some government workers needed to find a way to spend their downtime, so many went to online dating sites. Others, though, decided to watch pornography, as one site claims that its views skyrocketed during those 16 days.

Pornhub.com, one of the biggest adult websites in the country, said that there was a country-wide increase of 4.5 percent during the shutdown. Nevada saw the highest jump, with views up 42 percent. Missouri was the only state that dropped, falling 4.5 percent.

The top 10 states with the greatest traffic increase on the site were Nevada, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, New York, Illinois, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Ohio.

It turns out that while others were using their laptops more, some decided to head out and check the dating scene. According to WTOP, Zoosk said that online dating in the Washington, DC area spiked. In the second week of the shutdown, people viewing profiles for DC-area singles jumped 45.6 percent and the number of instant messages being sent jumped 48 percent.

NPR noted that ‘sugar daddy’ dating sites were also up, just in the hours after the shutdown started. SeekingArrangement.com said that it had a 50 percent jump in new profiles during the first days of the shutdown.
