Hollywood gets to close the book on 2013’s theatrical releases this week. Although we still have a few more Oscar favorites from 2013 that have yet to see wide release, as far as the industry is concerned, it’s time to start looking ahead.
Next year is rather interesting because we will start out by seeing films that were originally slated for 2013, chief among them George Clooney’s The Monuments Men. There is also Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher, starring Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, plus Nicole Kidman’s Grace of Monaco.
The summer season will also still be packed with a mix of comic book movies and sequels, although Fast & Furious 7 was pushed back. Unfortunately, there’s even more set for 2015, so clearly Hollywood is not going away from what works. If it it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
January 2014 is filled with the usual mix of cheap horror movies and films that have been in development too long and just get dumped. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones will give Paramount an idea of how good that franchise can do outside of October, while Lionsgate will try to get people excited for The Legend of Hercules. Lionsgate’s I, Frankenstein and Paramount’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit also open in January.
