‘12 Years A Slave,’ ‘Breaking Bad’ lead Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations

The nominees for the 20th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning, with many of this year’s expected Oscar contenders earning several nominations. On the television side, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and 30 Rock scored several nominations.

12 Years A Slave picked up nominations in every category except Outstanding Actress. Chiwetel Ejiofor scored a Outstanding Actor nomination, while Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o were nominated in the supporting categories. The entire cast was also nominated for Outstanding Performance.

There were also several surprises, with Forest Whitaker earning a nomination for his lead role in Lee Daniels’ The Butler. Whitaker and Ejiofor will compete in the category with Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club).

The nominees in the Outstanding Actress category are Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine); Sandra Bullock (Gravity); Judi Dench (Philomena); Meryl Streep (August: Osage County); and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks).

Fassbender’s competition in the male supporting category are Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips); Daniel Bruhl (Rush); the late James Gandolfini (Enough Said); and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club).

Oprah Winfrey (The Butler) and Nyong’o will have some tough competition in the female supporting category, including Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and June Squibb (Nebraska).

The nominees for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast are 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club, August: Osage County and Lee Daniels’ The Butler.

The final season of Breaking Bad was nominated for Outstanding Actor (Bryan Cranston), Outstanding Actress (Anna Gunn) and Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Drama.

30 Rock’s final season also scored nominations in several comedy categories, including Outstanding Actor (Alec Baldwin); Outstanding Actress (Tina Fey); and Outstanding Performance by an ensemble.

The casts of Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey were also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Drama. The other nominees in the same category for comedies are Arrested Development, The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Veep.
