GK Films will be telling the story of the band Queen and bringing this larger than life musical journey to film audiences everywhere. The upcoming film now has its leading man as Ben Whishaw is set to star as Freddie Mercury in the upcoming biopic. Dexter Fletcher is set to direct the movie, which will tell the story of how Queen rose to fame.
The film has experienced a few major changes already; originally Freddie Mercury was going to be play by Sasha Baron Cohen, reported Deadline. Cohen first signed on in to the project in 2010 but band members felt that Cohen’s personality might be too big for this role.
Whishaw will now take on the iconic role of Mercury. He is known for his work in I’m Not There. and Skyfall, reported Rolling Stone. It was rumored that since Cohen was out of the film, the role would likely go to Whishaw.
GK Films’ Graham King will be producing, and Sony Pictures has the first option for the film. This has been a passion project from King for many years.
Fletcher is working closely with King on this project. He made his directorial debut with the BAFTA-nominated Wild Bill before he helmed Sunshine On Leith, a musical based on the Proclaimers songbook.
Fletcher has been meeting with members of the band to get a feel for their personal story.
No release date has been announced for the film.
