Jay Z and Beyonce have embarked on a 22-day vegan challenge and PETA enthusiasts are cheering for the celebrity couples' attempt. The decision to steer clear of meat came after a friend challenged Jay Z to abstain from eating meat at breakfast time.
Jay Z's vegan diet started a day before his 44th birthday. "I will embark on a 22 Days challenge to go completely vegan, or as I prefer to call it, plant-based!!" the rapper wrote on his blog, according to The LA Times. "This all began a few months back when a good friend and vegan challenged me to embrace a 'plant-based breakfast' every day. It was surprisingly easier on me than I thought..."
"There's something spiritual to me about it being my 44th birthday and the serendipity behind the number of days in this challenge," Jay Z wrote. "22 (2+2=4) coupled with the fact that the challenge ends on Christmas day ... It just feels right!"
PETA praised the dynamic couples' decision to pursue "a spiritual and physical cleansing," as Jay Z explained, on their site.
When writing about his plans for his diet after the holiday season Jay Z admitted that he doesn't have one, musing a slew of quasi-answers. "A semi-vegan, a full plant-based diet? Or just a spiritual and physical challenge?"
The Huffington Post reports the couple seems to be searching for a spiritual retreat from the tedium of the ordinary. Jay Z explained that, "foods made of the best ingredients should satisfy not only the body, but also the spirit. We believe that the right attitude and approach to healthy living can positively affect the world."
