Hulu now a $1 billion company

By Chelsea Lewis ,

Hulu is now a $1 billion company. CEO Mike Hopkins announced that the company will cross the $1 billion mark in revenue before the end of 2013. Hulu launched as a company back in 2008.

Time reported that this marks a 43 percent increase in revenue from last year, thanks to jumps in subscriptions and ad-funded streaming videos for the company.

Hulu announced that its revenue will be up from $695 million from last year, reported The LA Times.

Over 5 million users are currently subscribed to the instant stream service. Hulu Plus has been used on over 400 million Internet-connected devices in the U.S. alone. It was also announced that 50 percent of subscribers watch the service on a non-PC device.

This year, Hulu released 20 original shows for users to view. A few of the shows gained a lot of popularity among users, including The Awesomes and Behind the Mask.

The company also made major deals in 2013, including a deal with BBC Worldwide North America, which brought shows like Doctor Who, Sherlock and Top Gear to Hulu.
