Instagram has about 55 million photos posted to its site every day, but one photo posted by Canadian singer Justin Bieber is taking the spot for most popular picture of 2013. The Biebs posted a photo of him with actor Will Smith four months ago and it has become the most liked photo with 1.5 million likes.
Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom appeared on the Today Show Friday to reveal the photo-sharing network’s most popular picture, as well as the most Instagrammed locations, and the most used hashtags of 2013.
Bieber has over 12 million Instagram followers so it's no surprise one of his photos would reach most liked photo of the year. Systrom believes the photo is popular because the stars look like they’re enjoying themselves.
The singer may have taken the prize for top photo but the Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand took top location of the year. The Eiffel Tower, which made the top ten last year, didn’t make the 2013 list, meaning that the Top 10 didn't include any European locations, according to the Daily Mail.
New York, however, added two new locations, Central Park and the High Line, to the list, in addition to second most Instagrammed location of the year, Times Square.
New York City was also the most Instagrammed city of the year. Five other U.S. cities, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas and San Francisco also made the list. But with 60 percent of Instagram users living outside of the U.S. Bangkok and London took second and third place for most photographed in 2013.
Systrom also revealed that the top hashtag of the year was #Love, which was mentioned in around 371 million posts. The rest of the top 5 was #friends, #fashion, #selfie, #food, and #tbt (throw back Thursday).
What was the most Instagrammed day of 2013 you ask? Well that would be Thanksgivingukkah, a holiday that won't happen again for tens of thousands of years.
