Two-time Oscar winner Jessica Lange has signed on to star in The Gambler, Paramount’s planned remake of the 1970s James Caan film of the same name. The project currently stars Mark Wahlberg.
Deadline first reported the news on Lange’s casting. She currently stars in Ryan Murphy’s FX series American Horror Story, taking roles in each of the show’s first three seasons. Her performance on the show earned her an Emmy and a Golden Globe in 2012. She has Oscars for her roles in 1982’s Tootsie and 1994’s Blue Sky.
It was reported in October that Brie Larson had signed on for a key role in The Gambler. Deadline reported at the time that the studio was also interested in casting Lange.
The original The Gambler was released in 1974 and starred Caan as a college professor who lets his gambling addiction take over his life and gets in trouble with a shady crowd. Wahlberg will play the same character, so it looks like the new project is being planned as a straight remake.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt was signed to direct.
Lange is set to appear in the fourth season of American Horror Story next year.
