The Free the Nipple campaign began when activists became appalled by the censorship surrounding the female body. The campaign's Facebook page wrote it aims to "decriminalize the female body" and "protest the backwards censorship laws in the US," according to The Huffington Post .
Cyrus commented on the absurdly stringent censorship protocol when watching the hit series Breaking Bad "They bleeped out the word 'f--k.' And I'm like, really? They killed a guy, and disintegrated his body in acid, but you're not allowed to say 'f--k?'"
According to Billboard Free the Nipple is a documentary exploring the censorship in the US media. Activists feel that the female body is degraded and is considered more obscene than violence (as violence in the media is less censored than the female body). New York is the first state to embrace the Free the Nipple campaign.
