Robert Redford, Discovery Channel developing scripted series 'The West'

By Daniel S Levine,

Robert Redford is teaming up with the Discovery Channel for a scripted series called The West. The project will focus on the 40 years between the end of the Civil War and the start of the 1900s.

The West will not have a central character, but rather focus on the violent criminals who ran wild in the West, from Jesse James to Crazy Horse, reports Variety. It is a Sundance Productions and Stephen David Entertainment co-production.

According to TheWrap, international distribution will be handled by DRG. In addition to Redford as executive producer, Laura Michalchyshyn has signed to executive produce with Stephen David and Michael Sorensen of Discovery.

“The stories of the American West are epic and profound with some of the biggest, most renowned and mythologized characters,” Redford and Michalchyshyn said in a statement.

Redford recently starred in J.C. Chandor’s All Is Lost and HitFix notes that the legend will receive the American Riviera Award and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Feb. 7.

The West is expected to premiere next year. It is the latest scripted series for Discovery, which will soon launch Klondike and is planning a remake of the North and South Civil War mini-series.
