Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will be in New York City on Tuesday night for the city's famous New Year's Eve celebrations to assist in ringing in the New Year by pushing the button that starts the famous ball drop.
According to the Associated Press, celebration organizers announced Sunday that the native New Yorker will lead the countdown and push the ceremonial button.
“Justice Sotomayor is an inspiration to many, and it is a privilege to welcome her to our celebration to ring in 2014,” said Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins.
Sotomayor was born in the Bronx and appointed to the Supreme Court in 2009.
She joins other politicians including Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who led the ball drop in 2004 and Bill and Hillary Clinton, who led the drop in 2008, notes Politico.
Last year, another politician, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg led the crowd countdown in Times Square. This year, however, the Mayor will not be in attendance.
