Top 10 Grammy awards snubs and surprises

The 56th Grammy award nominations have been announced. The fields for the coveted golden records are full of surprises and a few shocks. From Justin Timberlake being shut out of all four major categories to Lorde not receiving a best new artist nomination, the Grammy nominations shocked a lot of music fans.

The nominations concert brought out some of the biggest names in music to celebrate the awards. Jay-Z received nine nominations, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also gained Grammy respect and Taylor Swift grab another nomination for her most recent album, Red. Daft Punk also scored nods in the major categories.

A few artists seemed notably absent on the nominations sheet, including Justin Timberlake for his latest album the 20/20 Experience and Florida Georgia Line not receiving a new artist nomination even though they had one of the largest crossover hits ever with “Cruise.”

The Grammy Awards will air on Sunday, Jan 26th on CBS.

10. Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran had recorded his debut album years ago but with hits like “Lego House” and “A Team,” Sheeran has become a major name in the music industry even opening up for one of the largest tours of 2013, the Taylor Swift Red tour. Sheeran received a nomination for best new artist and it was well deserved after years of hard work.

Sheeran is planning a new album and tour next year.

9. J. Cole

J. Cole was the odd man out this year when it came to the strong hip-hop category. Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Drake and Jay-Z took control over the category leaving J. Cole notably absent. Two years ago Cole snagged a best new artist nomination.

8. Kacey Musgraves

Kacey Musgraves is a rising artist in the country music industry with hits like “Follow Your Arrow” and “Blowing Smoke.” Musgraves has received a best new artist nomination and deserved the recognition.

7. Lorde

Lorde gathered a few nominations but did not get one in the best new artist category. The shut out was surprising but can be healed with two nominations for “Royals” record of the year and song of the year.

James Blake has received a best new artist nomination. The mostly unknown artist pulled off a major upset outing major mainstream artists like Florida Georgia Line and Lorde who did not get a nomination.

5. Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar received multiple Grammy awards. Lamar will be competing for best rap album, album of the year, best new artist and best rap/sung collaboration. Lamar launched his career even further in 2013 and has the nominations to back up his success.

Florida Georgia Line was the breakout story of 2013 and the duo did not receive a nomination for best new artist or record of the year for “Cruise” which was one of the most popular crossover hits in the past few years.

Sara Bareilles shocked music fans when she received a album of the year nomination for her album The Blessed Unrest. "Brave" which is featured on the album is also up for best pop solo performance.

Justin Timberlake returned to music and had hit after hit with this album The 20/20 Experience. Timberlake was shut out of four major categories for his chart-topping album. The album was highly received by critics and music fans and everyone is still wondering how Timberlake did not receive some major nominations.

Jay-Z is leading the nominations when it comes to Grammy nights. The night will celebrate the best in music and it is no surprise that Jay-Z is leading the nominations with his album and is competing against himself rap/sung with "Part II (On the Run)," featuring his wife, Beyonce, also nominated. The night might belong to Jay-Z.
