An 88-year-old Nevada man was arrested for allegedly shooting his wife while she was at a hospital in Carson City, police said.
William Dresser was arrested Sunday. He allegedly fired once at his wife, shooting her in the chest at 11:30 a.m. at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong told The Associated Press. The injuries are life-threatening and she was taken to another hospital in Reno.
RGJ.com reports that Furlong credited corrections officers who happened to be on the same floor with stopping the incident from continuing. Mike Hendi, ESI Security Services chief executive officer, also told the site that hospital security had removed the .22 caliber handgun from Dresser’s hand.
“They took action to prevent this incident from escalating,” Furlong said. “So it was very quickly brought under control.”
The victim’s name and age was not released. Police said that her reason for being in the hospital was not due to foul play, notes the Daily News.
Carson Tahoe was shut down for two hours. The hospital issued a statement, citing a “targeted situation” as the reason for staying closed for that time. It re-opened by 1:45 p.m.
Police don’t have a motive for Dresser, who is currently under suicide watch. He is being held on $225,000 bail and was booked on suspicion of attempted murder.
