NBC has put in a pilot order for a new comedy with a gay character at the center. The pilot comes from Ellen DeGeneres and will be written by openly gay writer Liz Feldman.
The lesbian comedy landed at NBC in October. Feldman, who currently writes for CBS’ 2 Broke Girls, is writing the pilot and will be an executive producer with DeGeneres. Warner Bros. TV is producing with the popular daytime talk show host’s A Very Good Production.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is titled One Big Happy and stars a pregnant lesbian whose male best friend gets married.
DeGeneres and Feldman have a working relationship, as Feldman wrote for DeGeneres’ talk show, notes Deadline. Feldman also contributed to DeGeneres’ first turn as Oscars host.
NBC has tried to launch successful shows with gay characters to no avail. Sean Hayes’ Sean Saves The World has struggled in the ratings and Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal was cancelled after one season. Smash and Go On also saw early endings.
DeGeneres hosts the Oscars again on March 2.
