While children were playing on a basketball court behind Word Tabernacle Church in Rocky Mount, N.C, shot were fired, hitting four, around 6 p.m. on Monday.
Antwon Jefferson, 13, Michael Lyons, 17, and Jakavis Whaley,19, were hit, as well 12-year-old Nyreek Horne who was shot in the head. The three were treated and released, while Horne had to stay.
WNCN reports that the four children were taken to Nash General Hospital, Horne was later taken to Vidant Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
According to the The Associated Press, Rocky Mount has seen a high amount of violence, citing that in 2012, the FBI said the murder rate is twice as much in this town than in New York City.
James Gaillard, Preacher of the North Carolina church, said, "We put the basketball goals up and took the fence down specifically so the community could just walk on the premises and have a safe place to play. That trust has been violated."
Authorities are still looking for a shooter.
